What Is Editing
Have you ever found yourself in a position where you are done with writing your essay and finally feel like you can breathe, only to discover that there is one more process that awaits you? It sucks, doesn't it? It may be hard sometimes to see the need to reread your work to find mistakes that you are almost sure don't exist. After all, what exactly is the point of going through this entire process?
When you are researching and writing your essay, your focus is on getting the facts right and ensuring that your essay makes sense. Besides, you are focussed on hitting all the points that are required of you in that essay. What does this have to do with editing? Editing allows you the chance to comfortably go through your work without the pressure of thinking that you need to add something.
More often than not, you should consider a neutral and third party to come and edit the essay for you. This is because given that you are the one who's written the work, it may be hard for you to spot the mistakes in your own work. You may either breeze through the page or subconsciously miss some of the obvious grammatical errors. This is why if you have to edit your essay yourself, you should read it out loud to get a feel of how your work sounds.
Why Editing Is Important
Have you heard of a writer who edits their own work? Probably not. Why is this? Because editing is a whole other process compared to writing. As the writer of your work, it may be hard to be objective while editing it. But why should you carry out this process in the first place? There are several factors that you check when you are editing your work. While editing, you check for grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, and repetition.
First and foremost, nothing diminishes all your work and efforts other than grammatical errors. Have you ever read a text or even an email from a friend and they had made an apparent grammatical error? It's not something that you just jump over. It affects the way you see that person and the message they were trying to put across.
Also, editing allows you to correct any punctuation errors that there may be in your work. Missing commas and other punctuation marks are more common than you know. On the flip side, using punctuation marks where they are not meant to be used is also another error that will be caught while editing.
Last but not least, editing gives you the confidence you need in your work. When you submit your essay to your professor, you need to have the confidence and peace of mind that you need to know that you have done your complete best. Therefore, editing your work or having someone else edit it for you will give you that confidence boost.
Now that you know the importance of editing, you will have more motivation to edit your essay before you submit your work. Your grades will indeed thank you for this.
